Neoaves es un clado que contiene a todas las aves modernas (Neornithes) con la excepción de Paleognathae y Galloanserae. La temprana diversificación de los linajes de Neoaves ocurrió muy rápidamente, por lo que tratar de resolver las relaciones filogenéticas ha sido difícil, aunque se han logrado ciertos consensos en determinados linajes pero con varias controversias.[5][6][7] Este grupo está definido en el PhyloCode por George Sangster y colegas en 2022 como "el clado corona más inclusivo que contiene a Passer domesticus, pero no a Gallus gallus".[8] Casi el 95% de las más de 11.000 especies conocidas de aves existentes pertenecen a Neoaves.[9] La especie fósil más antigua de Neoaves de la que se tenga registro es Pujatopouli soberana del Cretácico tardío (Maastrichtiense) de la Antártida[1]

Historia de la clasificación de las Neoaves

Al darse la diversificación temprana de los diversos grupos neoavianos de forma acelerada alrededor del evento de extinción del Cretácico-Paleógeno,[10][11] los intentos de resolver sus relaciones entre sí resultaron inicialmente en mucha controversia.[12][13] Como resultado de esta rápida radiación, los intentos de resolver sus relaciones han producido resultados contradictorios, algunos bastante controvertidos, especialmente en los estudios anteriores.[12][14][15] Sin embargo, algunos estudios filogenómicos recientes a gran escala de Neoaves han llevado a un gran progreso en la definición de órdenes y grupos supraordinales dentro de clade. Aún así, los estudios no han logrado producir un consenso sobre una topología general de alto orden de estos grupos.[16][17][18][15] Un estudio genómico de 48 taxones realizado por Jarvis et al. (2014) dividió a Neoaves en dos clados principales, Columbea y Passerea, pero un análisis de 198 taxones realizado por Prum et al. (2015) recuperó diferentes agrupaciones para la división más temprana en Neoaves con clados como Columbaves.[16][17] Un nuevo análisis con un conjunto de datos extendido realizado por Reddy et al. (2017) sugirió que esto se debía al tipo de datos de secuencia, con secuencias codificantes que favorecían la topología de Prum.[18] El desacuerdo sobre la topología incluso con grandes estudios filogenómicos llevó a Alexander Suh en 2016 a proponer una politomía dura de nueve clados como base de Neoaves.[19] Un análisis de Houde et al. (2019) recuperó Columbea y una politomía dura reducida de seis clados dentro de Passerea.[20]

A pesar de otros desacuerdos, estos estudios coinciden en una serie de grupos supraordenales, que Reddy et al. (2017) denominaron los "siete magníficos", que junto con tres "órdenes huérfanos" conforman Neoaves.[18] Significativamente, ambos incluyen un gran clado de aves acuáticas (Aequornithes) y un gran clado de aves terrestres (Telluraves). El siguiente es un cladograma de las relaciones filogenéticas de Neoaves donde se reflejan los linajes sin resolver, que desde Jarvis et al. (2014) hasta Stiller et al. (2024) o Zhao et al. (2025), no se han podido determinar dentro de un cladograma definitivo.[21][7][22]
