William Godvin «Beaver» Harris (Pittsburgh, 20 de abril de 1936-Nueva York, 22 de diciembre de 1991)[1] fue un baterista de jazz estadounidense, conocido por su extensa colaboración con el saxofonista Archie Shepp Archie Shepp.[2]
Primeros años
[editar | editar código]Harris nació en Pittsburgh, Pensilvania. Provenía de una familia atleta y durante su adolescencia jugó béisbol para los Kansas City Monarchs, equipo de la Negro American League, y fue observado por los Brooklyn Dodgers y los New York Giants.[3]
Carrera
[editar | editar código]Tras servir en el ejército de los Estados Unidos, Harris comenzó a tocar la batería. En 1963 se trasladó a Nueva York, donde el legendario baterista Max Roach lo animó a dedicarse profesionalmente a la música. En la ciudad, trabajó y realizó giras con destacados músicos como Marion Brown, Dexter Gordon, Albert Ayler, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Clifford Jordan, Howard Johnson, Sheila Jordan, Lee Konitz, Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, McCoy Tyner, Sonny Stitt, Clark Terry, Chet Baker, Doc Cheatham y Larry Coryell, entre otros.[1][3]
Además, Harris fundó la banda de “música mundial” llamada 360 Degree Music Experience, integrada por artistas de renombre como Buster Williams, Hamiet Bluiett, Don Pullen, Jimmy Garrison, Ron Carter y Ricky Ford.[1]
Vida personal
[editar | editar código]Estuvo casado con Glo Harris y tuvieron tres hijos. Harris falleció en Nueva York a los 55 años, debido a un cáncer de próstata.[4]
